West Kootenay is under a severe thunderstorm warning.

Environment Canada (EC) is warning the West Kootenay that conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms to develop in the late afternoon or early evening, with significant wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain.

The warning was issued shortly before noon on Wednesday, July 7.

Pea to nickel-size hail, wind gusts of 70 km/h, and localized torrential downpours of 10 mm to 20 mm of precipitation are the storm’s main risks.

Trail, Castlegar, Nelson, and Kootenay Lake are among the areas of concern.

Every year, lightning kills and injures Canadians, according to the EC. “Remember to go inside when thunder claps.”

When atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce huge hail, damaging winds, or copious rainfall, severe thunderstorm watches are issued.
