The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, which were postponed for a year owing to the pandemic, wrapped up on Sunday with a joyous and reflective closing ceremony.
Athletes, some wearing their medals, filled the relatively empty Olympic Stadium floor, where they were greeted by a light show and musical performances by organizations such as the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. Given the pandemic-related need for athletes to return home quickly after their last competition, the number of athletes present was lower than usual.
The Olympic flame will be extinguished at the conclusion of the ceremony, and Tokyo will give over its hosting duties to Paris, the next city to host the Summer Olympics, in 2024. Due to the delay in staging the Tokyo Games, the Beijing Winter Olympics will begin in February 2022.
