According to McAfee’s lawyers, American software pioneer John McAfee, 75, was found dead in a prison cell in Barcelona, Spain, on Wednesday.
A Spanish court had just granted McAfee’s extradition to the United States, where he was due to stand trial on federal tax evasion allegations.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of his death.
McAfee, an eccentric and abrasive businessman best known for his namesake antivirus software, sold his stock in the company in the mid-1990s and spent the rest of his life traveling the world and getting himself into legal problems.
He eventually landed on an island off the coast of Belize, where he ran an opulent mansion known for wild parties and illegal activities. After being named as a suspect in a homicide on the property, he escaped.
In a 2019 tweet, McAfee boasted about being a tax evader, just as federal investigators were closing in on him. He couldn’t keep running indefinitely.
McAfee was detained in Spain in October 2020 for failing to file tax returns in Tennessee from 2014 to 2018 and hiding assets, including a yacht.
