(CNN) British comedian Sean Lock died on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer, according to his agent. He was 58 years old at the time.
“It is with tremendous sadness that we must announce Sean Lock’s death,” his representative said in an Instagram statement. He died of cancer at home, surrounded by his loved ones. Sean was one of the best comedians in the United Kingdom; his infinite originality, quick wit, and absurdist brilliance distinguished him as a singular voice in British comedy. Sean was a loving husband and father to his three children. Sean will be remembered fondly by those who knew him. We respectfully request that his family and children’s privacy be respected at this difficult time. “
On Twitter, fellow comedian Ricky Gervais lamented Lock’s death, calling him “one of the most influential comedians of his generation.”
“It’s heartbreaking news.” May the great Sean Lock rest in peace, “Gervais wrote. “He was one of the generation’s funniest and most influential comedians.” “He is a nice man.”
Lock had a big break in 2005 when he was cast as a team captain on Jimmy Carr’s Channel 4 comic panel show “8 Out of 10 Cats” for an 18-season run. He was later cast in “8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown,” a spinoff of the show.
Lock also co-hosted “The Big Fat Quiz of the Year” and created and performed in the BBC sitcom “15 Storeys High.” He went on tour with his improv act, “Lockipedia,” in which he talked about a variety of topics provided by the audience.
His wife, Anoushka Nara Giltsoff, and their three children survive him.
